Selected-a curated Photography & Printmaking exhibition
1st Feb - 2nd March 2024
Selected is an opportunity to see into the practice of 22 contemporary artist exploring and thriving in using the medias of Printmaking and Photography across 52 images on display.
Photography and printmaking are similar in that they both have the capability to reproduce an image multiple times with very little variation in the resulting print. However, photography came about through the desire to create exact visual replicas of forms and scenes without manual intervention, while printmaking originally aided the production of photographic illustrations in books by providing a stronger, non-light sensitive ink. Despite this, the two can exist harmoniously together, and photography provides a whole spectrum of new techniques for the printmaker to use in their artworks.
Although printmaking and photography both originated from discrete technologies for example armour engraving for etching and camera Obscura for photography. They both could be seen to promote the same objective, the desire to replicate a vision of reality in multiples for commercial, political or journalistic ends. Whilst the objective of both disciplines is to leave a trace albeit figure, landscape or still life, the two had been used differently in the art world until the point when they were brought together.
At this point , the processes proved mutually advantages . Printmaking originally aided the production of photographic illustrations in books by providing a stronger, non-light sensitive ink whilst photography provided a whole spectrum of new techniques for the printmaker to use in their artwork. The two then could exist harmoniously together.
Despite this the two are quite separate. Photography still holds on to its idea to be a literal of reality whilst printmaking allows more of the artist hand to be viable in a similar way to a painter. The choice of print technique can reflect the artists world view. For instance, Norman Ackroyd use of aquatint etching to create atmosphere whilst David Hockney’s mark making adds some humour to his work. It can be said that the mark making produced in printmaking echo’s the artist more than technique of photography does. On the other hand, artist photographers nowadays have learnt to use different techniques such as mis-en-scene. Pont of view, framing, lighting, creative developing and printing to make their work unique, as well as the digital involvement for both medias.
It is easy to overlook, but printmaking and photography are similar in terms and of the intention behind their development (at least in part), and they even share some of the same terminology regarding the final product-print. We hope that the range of images on display will ignite your desire to learn more about both medias and explore the artistry of each on display in Selected at CBD Gallery.
