Legend has it that the phrase comes from a painter who started painting a
tiger but, halfway through, was asked to paint a horse. So he simply gave the
tiger a horse’s head.
A horse? A tiger? He couldn’t quite decide.
Today, mǎmǎhūhū means so-so, careless, or just not quite right.
Not quite a horse. Not quite a tiger. Not quite anything.
